9/2/2013 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Shreveport native, Studio City VP, actor/producer Dudley Beene will open the 5th N LA Gay & Lesbian Film Festival Friday, Sept. 6
Shreveport, LA – September 1, 2013
The 5th North LA Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, presented by PACE, opens this Friday, Sept. 6th and runs through Sept. 12th at the Robinson Film Center in downtown Shreveport. Opening night, Sept. 6th will feature a special guest appearance by Shreveport native Dudley Beene who produced and has a leading role in the 7pm film First Period. After the film, Beene and the film’s director Charlie Vaughn, will conduct a Q & A. The film is showing at film festivals across the country, and Vaughn has already won a Best Director award for it at the comedy festival Quirkfest in Los Angeles.
FilmMonthly.com says First Period is “gut-bustingly funny” with intelligence and charm all over the place. Here’s the story:
New girl Cassie and school outcast Maggie (Beene) are easily the most unpopular girls at their high school. Together, they decide the way to win the hearts of cute boys and popular girls is to enter–and win–the annual Talent Show. But rivals Heather, Other Heather, and their popular boyfriends will stop at nothing to keep Cassie and Maggie the laughing stock of the school. It’s going to take courage, a make-over, and maybe even a rap battle to beat them in true 80s style.

PACE is thrilled that Dudley Beene will be returning to his hometown to discuss his film. Throughout his years at Caddo Middle Magnet and Caddo Magnet High he took every opportunity to make video presentations over writing a paper. Weekends were spent at the local Quail Creek Cinema watching John Waters and dark comedies, and evenings were spent watching Laugh-In on Nick at Night. Dudley took this mix of subversive yet optimistic humor to the University of Texas where he studied theater and worked at the local TV station producing “deliciously wrong” comedy skits.
Upon graduation he moved to Los Angeles to act. He appeared in a few commercials, TV shows, and local theater: most notably Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. After studying at the Groundling’s and trying his hand at standup, Dudley began to focus on comedy writing. He has spent the past seven years being the go to promo and joke writer for daytime talk shows, working daily for Kelly Ripa, Ellen Degeneres, and the ladies of The Talk. Dudley is now VP at the nations #1 broadcast marketing agency for television, Studio City.
Last year, he used his movie-making roots and joke-writing skills to produce his first feature: First Period. It’s an homage to the 80’s movies of John Hughes spiked with the wild comedy of John Waters in the joke-a-minute style of Laugh-In.
